Historical topics have always been a component of SPIEGEL SPECIAL’s issues. Examples of these have been Germany’s past, a review of the life of Pope John Paul I and the background to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 five years later.

Since 2007, the historical topics have appeared under the title of SPIEGEL SPECIAL GESCHICHTE. As from 2009, SPIEGEL SPECIAL GESCHICHTE has been renamed as SPIEGEL GESCHICHTE.
